What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune condition. The body's immune system mistakenly destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Without insulin, glucose cannot enter the body's cells for energy and builds up in the blood. T1D is not caused by eating too much sugar, and it cannot be prevented or cured — but it can be managed well with daily insulin.

Common symptoms in children

What is DKA?

Diabetic ketoacidosis

Without insulin, the body burns fat for energy and produces acids called ketones. As ketones build up, the blood becomes dangerously acidic. DKA can cause dehydration, coma and death, and it is the most common reason a late-diagnosed child ends up in intensive care.

Emergency warning signs

  • Rapid, deep breathing
  • Fruity-smelling breath
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Confusion or drowsiness

Go to an emergency department immediately.

How insulin works

1. Glucose enters the blood

Food is broken down into glucose, the body's main fuel.

2. Insulin unlocks the cells

Insulin acts like a key so glucose can enter muscle and other cells.

3. In T1D, the key is missing

Injected or pumped insulin replaces what the pancreas can no longer make.
